Shahada - A profession of faith
What is the Shahada?
The Shahada (Shahadah) is the Arabic term for the declaration of faith in one God (Allah) and His messenger.
شہادہ کیا ہے؟
شہادہ (شہادہ) عربی اصطلاح ہے جو اللہ (اللہ تعالیٰ) کی واحدیت اور اس کے رسول (حضرت محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم) پر ایمان کا اعلان کرنے کے لیے استعمال ہوتی ہے۔
What does the Shahada mean?
Transliteration: “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, Wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan Rasulu-Allah.” أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
Translation: “I bear witness that there is no God but God (Allah – i.e. there is none worthy of worship but Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
It is the most sacred statement in Islam, and must be recited with full understanding and mindfulness of it’s meaning.
یہ اسلام کا سب سے مقدس بیان ہے، اور اسے اس کے معنی کو مکمل طور پر سمجھ کر اور دھیان سے پڑھنا ضروری ہے۔
Why is the Shahada important?
The belief in one Allah is the central tenet of the Islamic faith, around which all else revolves. Muslims are continuously reminded of this foundational belief, in the recital of the Shahada (shahadah) during each of the five daily prayers, as well as many more pivotal moments of a Muslim’s life.

The second part of the Shahada requires Muslims to acknowledge and testify to the belief in the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as Allah’s messenger. This serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), but also as a reminder to never associate partners with Allah, for He is just a messenger, and Allah remains one God alone.
اللہ پر ایمان اسلامی عقیدے کا بنیادی اصول ہے، جس کے گرد دین اسلام کے تمام پہلو گھومتے ہیں۔ مسلمان اس بنیادی عقیدے کی مسلسل یاد دہانی حاصل کرتے ہیں، خاص طور پر شہادہ (کلمہ شہادت) کی تلاوت کے ذریعے جو وہ روزانہ کی پانچوں نمازوں میں اور زندگی کے کئی اہم مواقع پر پڑھتے ہیں۔

Five facts about the Shahada
1: One of the 5 pillars
The Shahadah is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a sacred testament given for Muslims to uphold throughout their lifetime and embody in all of their actions and intentions.
2: Recitation in the Adhan
The Shahadah is recited in the Adhan (call to prayer).
3: Recitation during Salah
Muslims recite the Shahadah once or twice in their Salah, which they are obliged to do during five different times of the day.
4: Acceptance of Islam
When someone wishes to convert to Islam as their religion, reciting the Shahadah marks their entrance into Islam and their life as a Muslim.
5: Recitation to newborns
The Shahadah is spoken as the first words a Muslim baby hears upon entering the world as part of the adhan, and Muslims strive for the Shahadah to be their last words upon their death.

- پانچ ارکان میں سے ایکشہادہ اسلام کے پانچ ارکان میں سے ایک ہے۔ یہ ایک مقدس عہد ہے جسے مسلمان اپنی زندگی بھر اپنی تمام کارروائیوں اور نیتوں میں پورا کرنے کے لیے پابند ہوتے ہیں۔
- اذان میں تلاوتشہادہ اذان (نماز کے لیے اذان دینے کی آواز) میں تلاوت کی جاتی ہے۔ یہ اذان کا ایک لازمی حصہ ہے جو تمام سننے والوں کو اللہ کی واحدیت اور حضرت محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے آخری رسول ہونے کی یاد دلاتی ہے۔
- نماز میں تلاوتمسلمان اپنی نماز (صلاة) کے دوران ایک یا دو بار شہادہ پڑھتے ہیں، جسے وہ دن میں پانچ بار پڑھنے کے لیے پابند ہیں۔
- اسلام میں داخلہجب کوئی شخص اسلام قبول کرنا چاہتا ہے، تو شہادہ پڑھنا ان کے اسلام میں داخل ہونے اور مسلمان ہونے کی علامت ہے۔ یہ اسلام قبول کرنے کا پہلا قدم ہوتا ہے۔
- نوزائیدہ بچوں کو شہادہ سناناشہادہ وہ پہلے الفاظ ہوتے ہیں جو ایک مسلمان بچے کو دنیا میں آنے کے بعد اذان کے حصے کے طور پر سنائے جاتے ہیں۔ اسی طرح، مسلمان اپنے انتقال کے وقت یہ شہادہ کہنا چاہتے ہیں تاکہ زندگی کے آغاز اور اختتام پر ایمان کی تصدیق ہو۔
