Past Tense Example

Past Simple Tense:

The Past Simple Tense is used to describe actions that happened and were completed in the past. The formula is:

Subject + Verb (2nd form) + Object.

Here are examples:

The train arrived at 5 PM. Subject: The train, Verb: arrived, Object: N/A ٹرین شام 5 بجے پہنچی۔
He studied hard for his exams. Subject: He, Verb: studied, Object: exams وہ امتحانات کے لیے محنت سے پڑھا۔
We went to the park yesterday. Subject: We, Verb: went, Object: the park ہم کل پارک گئے۔
She loved chocolate. Subject: She, Verb: loved, Object: chocolate اسے چاکلیٹ پسند تھی۔
Birds flew in the sky. Subject: Birds, Verb: flew, Object: N/A پرندے آسمان میں اُڑ گئے تھے۔
The baby cried when he was hungry. Subject: The baby, Verb: cried, Object: N/A بچہ بھوکا ہو کر روتا تھا۔
He worked in a software company. Subject: He, Verb: worked, Object: software company وہ سافٹ ویئر کمپنی میں کام کرتا تھا۔
I wrote emails to my clients yesterday. Subject: I, Verb: wrote, Object: emails میں نے کل اپنے کلائنٹس کو ای میلز لکھیں۔
They visited their grandparents last month. Subject: They, Verb: visited, Object: grandparents وہ پچھلے مہینے اپنے دادا دادی کے پاس گئے۔
She drank coffee in the morning. Subject: She, Verb: drank, Object: coffee اس نے صبح میں کافی پی۔
He spoke three languages fluently. Subject: He, Verb: spoke, Object: three languages وہ تین زبانیں روانی سے بولتا تھا۔
The sun rose in the east. Subject: The sun, Verb: rose, Object: N/A سورج مشرق سے نکلا۔
She sang beautifully. Subject: She, Verb: sang, Object: N/A وہ خوبصورت گاتی تھی۔
We celebrated birthdays with friends. Subject: We, Verb: celebrated, Object: birthdays ہم دوستوں کے ساتھ سالگرہ مناتے تھے۔
He took a shower in the morning. Subject: He, Verb: took, Object: a shower اس نے صبح نہایا۔
I read a book before sleeping. Subject: I, Verb: read, Object: a book میں سونے سے پہلے کتاب پڑھتا تھا۔
They helped the poor in their village. Subject: They, Verb: helped, Object: the poor وہ اپنے گاؤں میں غریبوں کی مدد کرتے تھے۔


Past Continuous Tense:

The Past Continuous Tense is used to describe actions that were in progress at a specific moment in the past. The formula is:

Subject + was/were + Verb (1st form + ing) + Object.

We were watching a movie last night. Subject: We, was/were: were, Verb: watching, Object: a movie ہم کل رات فلم دیکھ رہے تھے۔
He was studying when I arrived. Subject: He, was/were: was, Verb: studying, Object: N/A وہ پڑھ رہا تھا جب میں پہنچا۔
The children were playing outside all afternoon. Subject: The children, was/were: were, Verb: playing, Object: outside بچے ساری دوپہر باہر کھیل رہے تھے۔
She was cooking dinner when I came home. Subject: She, was/were: was, Verb: cooking, Object: dinner وہ رات کا کھانا پکا رہی تھی جب میں گھر آیا۔
I was listening to music when I fell asleep. Subject: I, was/were: was, Verb: listening, Object: to music میں موسیقی سن رہا تھا جب میں سو گیا۔
They were working on a project all day. Subject: They, was/were: were, Verb: working, Object: on a project وہ سارا دن ایک منصوبے پر کام کر رہے تھے۔
We were talking about the news when it happened. Subject: We, was/were: were, Verb: talking, Object: about the news ہم خبریں بات کر رہے تھے جب یہ واقعہ پیش آیا۔
He was walking to the park when I saw him. Subject: He, was/were: was, Verb: walking, Object: to the park وہ پارک جا رہا تھا جب میں نے اسے دیکھا۔
The dog was barking loudly all night. Subject: The dog, was/were: was, Verb: barking, Object: loudly کتا ساری رات زور سے بھونک رہا تھا۔
I was writing a letter when the power went out. Subject: I, was/were: was, Verb: writing, Object: a letter میں خط لکھ رہا تھا جب بجلی چلی گئی۔
They were studying when I visited them. Subject: They, was/were: were, Verb: studying, Object: N/A وہ پڑھ رہے تھے جب میں نے انہیں ملنے آیا۔

Past Perfect Tense:

The Past Perfect Tense is used to describe an action that was completed before another action or time in the past. The formula is:

Subject + had + past participle (Verb 3) + Object.

Here are examples:

They had left by the time we arrived. Subject: They, had: had, Past Participle: left, Object: N/A جب ہم پہنچے، وہ جا چکے تھے۔
We had just started the meeting when the power went out. Subject: We, had: had, Past Participle: started, Object: the meeting جب بجلی گئی، ہم نے میٹنگ شروع کی تھی۔
I had never seen such a beautiful place before. Subject: I, had: had, Past Participle: seen, Object: such a beautiful place میں نے اس سے پہلے ایسا خوبصورت مقام کبھی نہیں دیکھا تھا۔
She had lived in London for five years before moving to Paris. Subject: She, had: had, Past Participle: lived, Object: in London اس نے پیرس منتقل ہونے سے پہلے پانچ سال لندن میں گزارے تھے۔
By the time we reached the station, the train had already left. Subject: we, had: had, Past Participle: reached, Object: the station جب ہم اسٹیشن پہنچے، ٹرین پہلے ہی جا چکی تھی۔

Past Perfect Continuous Tense (also known as the Past Perfect Progressive Tense) is used to describe an action that was ongoing in the past before another action or time occurred. It shows the duration of an action that was happening before something else took place.

Formula:

Subject + had + been + present participle (verb+ing) + Object.

Examples:

They had been waiting for over an hour when the train arrived. Subject: They, had: had, been: been, Verb + ing: waiting, Object: for over an hour وہ ایک گھنٹے سے زیادہ وقت سے انتظار کر رہے تھے جب ٹرین پہنچی۔
I had been running for 30 minutes when it started raining. Subject: I, had: had, been: been, Verb + ing: running, Object: for 30 minutes میں تیس منٹ سے دوڑ رہا تھا جب بارش شروع ہو گئی۔

We had been practicing the song before the concert started. Subject: We, had: had, been: been, Verb + ing: practicing, Object: the song ہم گانے کی مشق کر رہے تھے اس سے پہلے کہ کنسرٹ شروع ہو گیا۔
She had been studying all night before the exam. Subject: She, had: had, been: been, Verb + ing: studying, Object: all night وہ ساری رات پڑھ رہی تھی اس سے پہلے کہ امتحان شروع ہوا۔

Key Points to Remember:
